By utilising some of the more complex features of isITon it is possible to monitor more than just your web servers. Some examples which are used by isITon clients are:
Database servers: If your web server has the ability to connect to a database with a scripting language, then create a simple script that returns a unique value from the database. By setting this value as the keyword for isITon to search for, anytime that your database is not functioning correctly isITon will send an alert.
Transaction and authentication servers: Some web servers connect to transaction servers, but sometimes you may not want a real transaction to take place every time isITon connects.
Two options are possible.
1. create a dummy transaction which does nothing but return a set value which should be used as the keyword for isITon to search for.
2. if your transaction server responds with a standard error message when parameters are incorrect or missing. Set the error message as the keywords for isITon to search for and specify incorrect parameters in the cgi parameter settings.
